I attended my first Pearland ISD School board meeting last night and found three things particularly interesting. First it seems that the school calendar is full of days that are nothing but fluff that Pearland students can easily make up ten missed school days just by taking those activities out. Things like Red Ribbon week, Fire Truck visits, Celebrity readers, dancing bears, magic shows, and a whole list of other activities that have nothing to do with whether the kids can read, write, or do basic math.
Second thing I noted was the PISD has lots of property and all of it in the wrong places. PISD has so much property that the board is considering selling it off as surplus. However the problem of needing property in the west end of the city remains. The board is concerned about getting maximum value from the property and not selling it for less than what they paid. It would seem in a down economy that the board it going to be holding excess property for a while.
Third was the the 9th grade center discussion. It would seem that when Dawson opens next year that the 9th Grade Center will no longer be needed and Dr Cain is considering closing the campus for the 09-10 school year. I find this news surprising due to the fact that right before she said this there was discussion there was concern that Pearland HS was overcrowded. I plan to post more on this if I can find out some more information.

Mr. Tuffin:
Thank you for your comment. If you are interested in the property information you can request any information through the district communication office. I look foward to meeting you at the next school board meeting.
